4 Things That Could Accidentally Sabotage Your Weight Loss

As with most challenges in life, succeeding in your weight loss goals starts with having the right mental outlook. The psychology of losing weight is the subject of many entire books, but you just need the bullet points. So, what are the most common ways in which dieters mentally sabotage themselves?

1. “I must be perfectly thin to be happy.”

This could not be further from the truth. As long as you are improving yourself and moving towards your goal, you deserve to feel good about yourself. You don’t need to wait until you’ve reached your final destination physically before you start celebrating the changes you’re making. In fact, if you go into it with that mentality, you will probably have a hard time being happy even after reaching your perfect weight and fitness level.

2. “I must eat until I’m full.”

Big, gut-busting meals are all too familiar to many of us. We’ve conditioned ourselves to feel like the meal is not over until we can not eat any more. In reality, this is a very unhealthy way to approach eating. Your decision about whether to eat more or stop eating should be based on sound nutritional guidelines.

3. “I just have to have my comfort foods.”

Those foods became items of comfort for you because you ate them consistently over such a long period of time. There are plenty of delicious foods out there which also happen to be healthy. Instead of perpetuating your old, bad habits, start new ones! In no time at all, you’ll gain a whole new set of comfort foods – ones that you can really feel good about eating.

4. “I can’t stick with a weight loss program”

You have to. The only way you will avoid living as an overweight person is to live as a healthy person. This simply isn’t negotiable. It’s not enough to decide that you’re unhappy living with all of that extra weight and the increased health risks that come with it. You have to be unhappy enough to actually do something about it, and then you have to keep on taking action until the weight is gone. You have to stick with it!
